A SpeedQuizzing alternative with no app to install

SpeedQuizzing was built for UK pub quizzes: players use an app, hosts run desktop software (plus a Wi-Fi hub for the Pro version), and you pay for every quiz day. Quizzo runs entirely in the browser: players join with a 6-digit PIN or QR code, and one $9/month plan covers unlimited games with up to 500 players. Below is an October 2026 comparison of costs, limits and formats, including what SpeedQuizzing does better.

What is SpeedQuizzing?

SpeedQuizzing is a smartphone pub-quiz system from SpeedQuizzing Ltd in York, England, co-founded by Alan Leach, the drummer of Shed Seven, and his brother John to stop cheating at pub quizzes. Hosts run SpeedQuizzing Pro desktop software over a local Wi-Fi network created by the Pocket Hub, or SpeedQuizzing Web over the internet with a 6-digit PIN, and teams answer in a free app for iOS, Android or Kindle Fire. It is known for speed-based answering, pub-quiz formats such as letters, numbers, sequence and buzzer rounds, and a 70+ question Quizpack with every activation. Its market is mainly the UK and Ireland, and in April 2024 a SpeedQuizzing host set a Guinness World Record for the longest quiz-master marathon, at 35 hours.

Best for: UK and Irish pub and bar quiz hosts who run weekly, competitive team quizzes in venues, especially where Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Why people look for a SpeedQuizzing alternative

  • Every player or team has to install the SpeedQuizzing app before they can play.
  • Hosts need Windows or Mac software, and Pro events also need a Pocket Hub ($50) to create the local network.
  • Per-quiz fees add up for weekly hosts: $30 per Pro quiz day, or about $19.46 with the 52-quiz bundle ($1,012 up front).
  • SpeedQuizzing Web, the internet option for remote play, has fewer formats than Pro, depends on players' connections and is listed at about 200 devices.
  • The license restricts remote and multi-venue use, and the product is focused on the UK and Ireland.

Where Quizzo is better

  • Nothing to install

Players join at playquizzo.com/join in any browser with a 6-digit PIN or QR code, and hosts run everything from the web. There's no app, desktop software or hub.

  • One flat monthly price

Quizzo is $9/month for unlimited games. On SpeedQuizzing, four Pro quiz nights cost $105 with the 4-quiz bundle, or about $78 even at the lowest bundle rate ($19.46 per quiz).

  • 500 players online

Each Quizzo game takes up to 500 players over the internet. SpeedQuizzing Web, its internet-based version, is listed at about 200 devices, depending on connection quality.

  • Same setup in any room

In-room, hybrid and remote games all work the same way, with the full question and answers on every phone. SpeedQuizzing uses its hub-based Pro version in venues and the more limited Web version for remote play.

Where SpeedQuizzing is better

  • Works without venue internet

SpeedQuizzing Pro runs on its own local Wi-Fi network from the Pocket Hub, so weak venue Wi-Fi or poor phone signal doesn't stop the quiz. Quizzo needs an internet connection.

  • Real pub-quiz formats

SpeedQuizzing has letters, numbers, sequence, nearest-wins, Buzzin' and fastest-finger rounds, picture and audio rounds, Go Wide and Evil Mode, plus multiple choice with up to 6 options.

  • Questions included

Every activation includes a fresh Quizpack of 70+ questions, and bingo is free. Quizzo has no question library.

  • Pay only when you play

Credits never expire, so there's no subscription to cancel between seasons. SpeedQuizzing also has an established UK host community and professional hosts for hire.

SpeedQuizzing pricing vs Quizzo

As of October 2026, SpeedQuizzing has no subscription: you buy credits and spend 1 per SpeedQuizzing Web quiz day (US$10, or £8 + VAT in the UK) or 3 per Pro quiz day (US$30, or £24 + VAT). The largest bundle ($1,012 for 156 credits) brings the price down to about $19.46 per Pro quiz or $6.49 per Web quiz, credits never expire, and Pro hosts also need a $50 Pocket Hub. Quizzo is $9/month for unlimited games with up to 500 players, billed monthly. A single Pro quiz day costs more than a month of Quizzo, and from the second Web quiz in a month, Quizzo is cheaper even at SpeedQuizzing's lowest bundle rate.

Should you switch from SpeedQuizzing to Quizzo?

Stay with SpeedQuizzing if you run weekly team quizzes in pubs, need its offline hub where Wi-Fi is poor, or rely on its letters, numbers and buzzer formats and ready-made Quizpacks. Switch to Quizzo if you want players to join from a browser with no app, run remote or hybrid games as easily as in-room ones, or prefer one $9 monthly price to paying for every quiz day.

How to switch from SpeedQuizzing to Quizzo

  1. Create your Quizzo account and open the dashboard.
  2. Click “New quiz”, paste in your questions and answers, and mark the correct one. Add images and timers where you need them.
  3. Press “Start game” to open the lobby, then show the PIN or QR code on the big screen.
  4. Players join at playquizzo.com/join on their phones — no app, no account — and you're live.

Quizzo doesn't import quizzes from other tools yet, so plan a few minutes to copy your questions over.

SpeedQuizzing alternative: FAQ

How much does SpeedQuizzing cost?

There's no subscription. As of October 2026, a SpeedQuizzing Web quiz day costs 1 credit (US$10, or £8 + VAT) and a Pro quiz day costs 3 credits (US$30, or £24 + VAT); bundles bring the price down, and Pro hosts also need a $50 Pocket Hub.

Is there a free version of SpeedQuizzing?

Not really. The host software runs in a demo mode limited to 4 player devices, and bingo is free. Quizzo has no free plan either; it costs $9/month.

Do players need an app for SpeedQuizzing?

Yes. Players, usually one device per team, install the free SpeedQuizzing app on iOS, Android or Kindle Fire. Quizzo players join in any browser at playquizzo.com/join with a 6-digit PIN or QR code.

How many players can SpeedQuizzing handle?

SpeedQuizzing Web supports about 200 devices, depending on internet quality. For Pro, the pricing page says an activation allows unlimited devices, while the version comparison lists 64. Quizzo allows up to 500 players per game.

Does SpeedQuizzing work without internet?

SpeedQuizzing Pro does: it runs over a local wireless network created by the Pocket Hub, so it doesn't rely on venue internet. Quizzo is web-based, so the host and players need an internet connection.

Can I use my SpeedQuizzing questions in Quizzo?

Quizzo can't import from other tools, so copy your questions over. Multiple-choice questions with 2–4 options fit as they are; letters, numbers, sequence and nearest-wins questions need rewriting as multiple choice.
