A Kahoot alternative for teachers, from classrooms to lecture halls
Quizzo is a live quiz game for classrooms and lecture halls: students join with a PIN on any device and read every question on their own screen. It costs $9/month, billed monthly, for up to 500 students per game, so you can pay for exam season and cancel over the summer. Here's how it compares with Kahoot's teacher plans, including where Kahoot is still the better fit.
Where Kahoot gets in the way
Free caps of 40, or 10 at university
Kahoot's free plan allows 40 players per game on K-12 teacher accounts and only 10 on higher-education accounts, so most university courses are over the limit on day one.
No monthly option for educators
Bronze ($36), Silver ($84), Gold ($144) and Kahoot! One ($228) are charged once a year, and Kahoot's FAQ says none of its educational plans can be billed monthly. Annual plans renew automatically unless you cancel before the renewal date.
Big lectures and assemblies need the top tier
Gold stops at 200 players, so a 250-seat lecture or a whole-grade assembly means Kahoot! One at $228 a year. In 2024 Kahoot also cut the caps of its $48 and $96 teacher tiers from 100 to 50 and from 200 to 100 players.
The back row depends on the projector
In Kahoot's live games, students' devices show only colored shapes unless you turn on the free “Show questions & answers on participants' devices” setting. Students who can't read the board, whether because of distance, glare or eyesight, fall behind.
How Quizzo helps
Pay in the months you use it
$9/month, billed monthly, cancel anytime. Subscribe for exam review season and stop over the summer instead of paying for a year up front.
One plan from 25 to 500 students
Every game takes up to 500 players, so the same plan covers a small class, a 300-seat lecture or a grade-wide review in the auditorium.
The question is on every screen
Each student sees the full question and all answers on their own device, which helps anyone who sits far from the board or struggles to read it.
No student accounts
Students join at playquizzo.com/join with a 6-digit PIN or the QR code and pick a nickname: no app, no email, no sign-up. Click a nickname in the lobby to remove that player.
Misconceptions show up instantly
An answer chart after every question shows how the class split, and the results saved under Games list each student's score and number of correct answers.

Quiz ideas to get you started
- Bell-ringer: five questions on yesterday's lesson with 20-second timers while you take attendance.
- Exit ticket: three questions in the last five minutes; the answer chart tells you what to reteach tomorrow.
- Peer instruction for lectures: ask a concept question, show the answer chart, give students two minutes to convince a neighbor, then ask the same question again (add it twice with “Duplicate”).
- Map round: a map image with one country or region highlighted and four names to choose from.
- Picture vocabulary: show a photo and offer four words in the target language, such as an apple with 'manzana', 'naranja', 'pera' and 'uva'.
- Mental math sprint: ten questions on 10-second timers; speed scoring rewards answers that are both quick and correct.
- Spot the misconception: 'Why is it warmer in summer?' with 'Earth is closer to the Sun' among the wrong answers, then discuss the chart.
- Which came first?: four historical events as the answers, and only the earliest one is correct.
- Grammar fix-it: four versions of the same sentence, only one of them punctuated correctly.
- Exam review tournament: 30 mixed questions from the whole unit, played by one class or by a whole grade in the auditorium.
Running your first game
- Sign up, open “My quizzes” and click “New quiz”; call it something like “Unit 4 review”.
- Type each question, add two to four answers, mark the correct one and choose a timer from 5 to 120 seconds. Attach an image for maps, diagrams or graphs.
- In class, press “Start game”: the projector shows playquizzo.com/join, a 6-digit PIN and a QR code.
- Students join from phones, tablets, Chromebooks or laptops and type a nickname. Click any nickname you don't like to remove that player.
- Press “Start”. Keep a manual pace to discuss the answer chart after each question, or turn on “Auto-advance” for a quick timed review.
- After the podium, open “Games” to see every student's score and number of correct answers.
Good to know
Quizzo runs live games only: there's no homework or self-paced mode, no reports or CSV export, and no Google Classroom or LMS integration. Questions are multiple choice, and there's no AI generator or ready-made library, so you write your own. If you teach 40 or fewer K-12 students and only need live games, Kahoot's free plan may be enough, and over a full 12 months Quizzo ($108) costs more than Kahoot's Bronze ($36) or Silver ($84) plans.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Kahoot alternative for teachers?
Quizzo isn't free: it costs $9/month with no free plan or trial, billed monthly so you can cancel after exam season. If free matters most, Kahoot's own free plan covers 40 players per game on K-12 teacher accounts (10 in higher education).
Can teachers pay for Kahoot monthly?
No. Kahoot's educational plans (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Kahoot! One) are billed once a year, from $36 to $228. Quizzo is billed monthly at $9.
Do students need an account or email address to play Quizzo?
No. Students enter the 6-digit PIN at playquizzo.com/join or scan the QR code, then type a nickname. There's nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
Is Quizzo a good Kahoot alternative for university lectures?
For live concept checks, yes: one game takes up to 500 students and every question appears on their phones, so the back rows don't need to read the slides. On Kahoot, free higher-education accounts are limited to 10 players, and more than 200 players requires Kahoot! One ($228/year).
Can I assign a Quizzo quiz as homework?
No. Quizzo runs live games only. If you need self-paced assignments, Kahoot or another homework-focused tool is the better fit.
Can I reuse quizzes I made in Kahoot?
Yes, by copying them over: Quizzo can't import from Kahoot, but you can paste each question and its answers into the editor. Questions with five or six answers, or type-answer questions, need to be rewritten as multiple choice with up to four options.
