A Kahoot alternative for trivia nights, pub quizzes and quizmasters
Quizzo gives quizmasters a Kahoot-style game for pubs, bars and clubs: teams join from a phone, read every question at their table and race for speed points. One plan costs $9 a month however many quiz nights you run, with up to 500 players per game. Here's how it compares with Kahoot for weekly trivia, and what it can't do.
Where Kahoot gets in the way
Ten players on the free plan
On a personal account, Kahoot's free plan lets at most 10 players into a game. A pub quiz with a dozen teams is over the limit before the first round.
Every size step costs more each month
Kahoot's monthly personal plans are priced by room size: $9 for 50 players, $15 for 100, $25 for 200 and $34.99 for 800. One busy night can push you into a pricier tier.
Paid quiz nights raise a license question
According to Kahoot's business pricing pages, commercial and marketing use is licensed only on top tiers such as Event Ultra ($799) and Pro Ultra ($948 a year). If you charge entry or host for a venue, check Kahoot's terms before relying on a personal plan.
The question lives on a TV in the corner
Out of the box, Kahoot's phones show colored answer shapes while the question sits on the TV. In a bar with pillars and screens at odd angles, that means a lot of craning unless you switch on questions on devices.
How Quizzo helps
$9 a month for every quiz night
Run four weekly quizzes in a month for $9 in total, and cancel during the summer break. Players never pay.
The question at every table
Each team sees the full question and answers on its own phone, so nobody has to read the TV from across the room.
Picture rounds that work on phones
Add an image to any question; it appears on the big screen and on players' phones next to the answers.
Game-show atmosphere built in
Built-in music and sound effects keep the room buzzing, the answer chart and top-5 leaderboard after every question fuel the banter, and the winning team gets a confetti podium.
Bar-proof hosting
Latecomers can join mid-quiz, a phone that locks rejoins with its points intact, and a rude team name disappears from the lobby with one click.

Quiz ideas to get you started
- General knowledge opener: 10 questions on 20-second timers, nothing too hard, to warm up every table.
- Picture round: zoomed-in logos, flags, celebrity childhood photos or album covers as question images.
- Name the year: a headline, song or invention with four years as the answers.
- Local legends: questions about your town, your street and the pub itself; regulars love beating the newcomers.
- Odd one out: four options, one of which doesn't belong, such as 'Which of these is not a Shakespeare play?'
- Higher or lower: two-answer questions on prices, populations, box-office takings and stadium capacities.
- Music round without audio: lyric snippets, emoji song titles or album covers, with the artist to pick from four options.
- Themed nights: '90s night, movie quotes night or sports night; a new theme each week gives regulars a reason to come back.
- Lightning round: 5-second timers to finish; speed scoring (500–1,000 points per correct answer) rewards the quickest tables and breaks most ties.
Running your first game
- Build the night under “New quiz”: one quiz per round, or one long quiz for the whole evening.
- Connect the laptop to the venue's TVs or projector, route the sound to the speakers and click “Turn on sound” in the lobby for the music.
- Press “Start game” as teams arrive: the TVs show the join address, the 6-digit PIN and a QR code. The PIN is new for every game, so there's nothing to print in advance.
- Each team joins with one phone and uses its team name as the nickname (up to 20 characters).
- Press “Start” and host at your own pace: manual mode leaves time for banter and explaining answers between questions.
- Crown the winners on the podium; each game's scores are saved under “Games” if you keep a league table.
Good to know
Quizzo is multiple choice only: no write-in answers, no audio clips in questions and no team mode, so teams share one phone each. Each game is scored separately, so if you run rounds as separate games, add up the totals yourself from the results under Games. There's no free plan; hosting costs $9 a month.
