Yes, Kahoot has a free plan, but it's limited. The free tier, Kahoot! Go, lets you host live games for up to 40 players on a K-12 teacher account and only 10 on personal, student or higher-education accounts, with quiz and true/false questions. Who has to pay for Kahoot?
Only the host. Players join for free at kahoot.it or in the Kahoot! app with the game PIN. What can cost money is hosting: the size of your group and the features you need decide whether the free plan is enough.
As a rule of thumb, a K-12 teacher with a class of up to 40 can stay on the free plan. With a personal account, anything beyond 10 players — a family quiz, a birthday party, a small office team — needs a paid plan.
Why the free limit is 10 for some and 40 for others
Kahoot sets the free player cap by account type, which you choose when you sign up. K-12 teacher accounts get 40 players per game. Personal, student and higher-education accounts get 10.
Work accounts don't get Kahoot! Go at all. They get Kahoot! 360 Express, which allows 15 participants in sessions of up to 15 minutes.
What upgrading costs
Teacher plans are billed once a year: Bronze $36 (50 players), Silver $84 (100), Gold $144 (200) and Kahoot! One $228 (800). Personal and student accounts can also pay month to month: $9, $15, $25 or $35. Kahoot! 360 work plans start at $19 per presenter per month, billed annually.
Has the free plan changed?
The plan itself was renamed from Kahoot! Basic to Kahoot! Go in spring 2026. The paid plans have changed more: in mid-2024 Kahoot halved the player caps of its cheaper teacher plans at the same price, and in October 2025 it replaced them with the current Bronze, Silver, Gold and Kahoot! One plans.
Need more than 10 or 40 players? Quizzo costs $9/month
Quizzo is a live quiz game with a single plan: $9 a month, billed monthly, for up to 500 players per game, with every feature included. There is no free plan, but there are no player tiers or yearly commitments either. Players join at playquizzo.com/join with a PIN or QR code, with no app or account.
Quizzo only has multiple-choice questions, and no AI, homework mode or ready-made library. If you need those, Kahoot's paid plans are the better fit.
