A Kahoot alternative for large groups of 100 to 500 players

Quizzo runs live quizzes for 100 to 500 players on one $9/month plan, so there's no upgrade when your group grows past 50, 100 or 200. Every player reads the full question on their own phone, which matters when the back of the room is far from the screen. Quizzo's hard limit is 500 players per game, and for bigger crowds this page tells you what to use instead.

Where Kahoot gets in the way

  • A new plan every time the group grows

On Kahoot's teacher and personal plans, the player cap jumps from 50 (Bronze) to 100 (Silver), 200 (Gold) and 800 (Kahoot! One). You have to plan the headcount before the budget.

  • Past 200 players, the price jumps

Hosting 201 players takes Kahoot! One instead of Gold, so the yearly price goes from $144 to $228. On the work side, the step after 200 participants is Pro Plus: 1,000 participants for $468 per presenter per year.

  • Free plans stop at 10, 15 or 40

Kahoot's free plan allows 40 players on K-12 teacher accounts and 10 on personal or higher-ed accounts, and the free work plan allows 15. Once a game is full, latecomers can't join; 'kahoot player limit reached' even shows up in Google's autocomplete.

  • Fewer players for the same money since 2024

In mid-2024 Kahoot kept its prices but halved the caps: the $48 tier went from 100 to 50 players and the $96 tier from 200 to 100. Hosting 200 players cost $72–$96 a year in 2023 and early 2024 and costs $144 today.

How Quizzo helps

  • 500 players, no tier math

Whether 120 people show up or 480, it's the same $9/month plan. Every game takes up to 500 players.

  • Tested under load

Quizzo has been load-tested with 300 simultaneous players, and the 500-player cap is a fixed limit, not an upsell.

  • Joining that scales

A QR code on the big screen gets hundreds of people in fast, and the PIN works for anyone too far away to scan. Late join and reconnect keep the crowd in the game.

  • Readable from every seat

The full question and answers appear on each phone, so people behind a pillar or at the back of the hall play on equal terms.

  • Moderation in a big crowd

Spot an offensive nickname in the lobby and click it to remove that player.

Quiz ideas to get you started

  • Department vs. department: ask players to start their nickname with a tag ('HR Ana', 'IT Ben') so the leaderboard becomes a rivalry. Quizzo has no team mode, so this keeps it simple.
  • Easy opener: start with a question everyone gets right and watch the answer count to confirm the whole room is connected.
  • Room-split questions: ask something the crowd will disagree on but that has one correct answer; the answer chart for 400 people is a show in itself.
  • Orientation week campus quiz for 400 new students: photos of campus buildings with four names each.
  • Whole-school assembly: an end-of-term quiz in the gym with one question from every subject.
  • Festival or convention break: a 10-question pop-culture round between acts on 10-second timers.
  • Two-option speed questions: 'Higher or lower?' and 'Real or fake?' give hundreds of people two big buttons that are quick to tap.
  • Lightning finale: a last round on 5-second timers, where speed scoring separates the top of a crowded leaderboard.

Running your first game

  1. Check the numbers: one game holds up to 500 players. If you expect more, Quizzo isn't the right tool.
  2. Build the quiz under “New quiz” and keep answers short so they read quickly on small screens.
  3. Check the room: a big screen for the lobby and leaderboard, sound through the PA, and Wi-Fi or mobile coverage that can handle the crowd.
  4. Press “Start game” and leave the lobby up while people arrive. Most will scan the QR code; read the PIN aloud for the back rows.
  5. Watch the player counter climb, click any unwanted nickname to remove it, then press “Start”.
  6. Turn on “Auto-advance” so the game paces itself while you work the room; results are saved under “Games” after the podium.

Good to know

Quizzo stops at 500 players per game (anyone who tries to join after that sees a 'game is full' message), so for 600, 1,000 or 5,000 people choose a platform built for that size, such as Kahoot! One (800 players), Kahoot! 360 Pro Plus (1,000) or Kahoot's event plans (up to 5,000). Quizzo has been load-tested with 300 simultaneous players, and a big crowd's experience also depends on the venue's network. There's no team mode, so everyone plays as an individual.

Frequently asked questions

Can Quizzo handle 100 people?

Yes. 100 players is a fifth of Quizzo's 500-player limit and costs the same $9/month. On Kahoot, 100 players needs at least Silver: $84/year on a teacher account or $15/month on a personal account.

How many players can join a Kahoot game?

It depends on the plan: 10 or 40 on the free plan, 50, 100 or 200 on Bronze, Silver or Gold, 800 on Kahoot! One and up to 5,000 on top work and event plans.

Is there a free Kahoot alternative for large groups?

Quizzo charges $9/month instead of offering a free tier, but that one price covers 500 players without upgrades. Kahoot's free plan is sized for small groups: 10 players on personal accounts and 40 on K-12 teacher accounts.

What happens when a Quizzo game reaches 500 players?

The game is full: anyone else who tries to join sees a message and can't get in. If you expect more than 500, use a platform with a higher cap.

Can 300 people play at the same time?

Yes. Quizzo has been load-tested with 300 simultaneous players. Real-world performance also depends on the venue's Wi-Fi or mobile coverage, so test the room beforehand.

Can I split a big crowd into teams?

There's no team mode. Players can add a team tag to their nickname, or each team can share one phone.
