Kahoot vs Socrative: key differences
Assessment first vs game first
Socrative, owned by Canada's Showbie since 2018, is designed to check understanding: quizzes, exit tickets and on-the-fly quick questions are graded automatically, and per-student results download as PDF or Excel. Kahoot is designed to engage, with countdowns, music, speed points and a leaderboard after every question.
Who sets the pace
Socrative quizzes can be teacher-paced, give instant feedback after each answer, or let students move through the questions at their own pace. Kahoot's live games move together on the host's timer; self-paced work happens through separate assignments.
Gamification
Socrative's one game is Space Race: teams answer a quiz while rockets race across the teacher's screen. Kahoot is gamified throughout, with classic and team modes, podiums and Kahootopia rewards.
Question types
Socrative supports multiple choice, true/false and short answer. Kahoot has 13+ types, including puzzle, slider, type answer, poll and word cloud, though most beyond quiz and true/false need a paid tier.
Billing and room size
Socrative is one of the few tools in this category with monthly billing ($14.99 for Essentials, $24.99 for Pro), and Pro takes 300 students per room. Kahoot's teacher plans are annual-only and cap games at 50, 100, 200 or 800 players.
Kahoot vs Socrative pricing
As of October 2026, Socrative Essentials costs $10 per seat per month billed annually ($120 a year) or $14.99 month to month, for 50 students per room across 5 rooms; Pro costs $16.67 per month billed annually ($200.04 a year) or $24.99 month to month and raises the limit to 300 students per room, and both come with a 21-day free trial. Kahoot's teacher plans can only be paid yearly: $36 for 50 players (Bronze), $84 for 100 (Silver), $144 for 200 (Gold) or $228 for 800 (Kahoot! One). On annual plans Kahoot is cheaper for classes of up to 200 — 50 players cost $36 a year versus $120 on Socrative — but Socrative is the one a teacher can pay month to month.
Choose Kahoot if…
- you want students excited to play, not just to be assessed
- you need question types beyond multiple choice, true/false and short answer
- your annual budget is small: 50 players cost $36 a year
- you want team mode, several game modes and a podium at the end
- your groups go beyond 300 players — up to 800 on Kahoot! One
Choose Socrative if…
- you want quick formative checks and exit tickets with auto-graded, per-student reports
- students should be able to work through a quiz at their own pace during class
- you'd rather pay month to month ($14.99 or $24.99)
- one team game like Space Race is all the gamification you need
- you want to try paid features first with a 21-day free trial
Or pick Quizzo if…
- you run live, game-show style quizzes and want one simple price: $9/month, billed monthly
- your groups are big — up to 500 players per game
- players should be able to read every question on their own phone (large rooms, hybrid and video calls)
- you don't need homework, self-paced or presentation features
Our verdict
Socrative is the quieter, more practical tool: fast checks, exit tickets and clear per-student reports, with monthly billing if you want it. Kahoot is the livelier one, with far more question types and game modes, and it's cheaper on an annual plan for classes of up to 200. If your priority is data on each student, choose Socrative; if it's engagement, choose Kahoot. And if you mainly want live games for large groups with monthly billing, Quizzo costs $9/month for up to 500 players.
