The Formative alternative for fast, live quiz games

Formative is built for assessment, with 20+ item types, live monitoring, rubrics and standards tracking. Quizzo is built for one thing: a live, game-show style quiz for up to 500 players at $9/month, billed monthly. What is Formative?

Formative, formerly GoFormative, is a real-time instruction and assessment platform founded in 2013 by Craig Jones and Kevin McFarland and launched in January 2015. Newsela acquired it in June 2023. Teachers build lessons and assessments from 20+ item types, run them student-paced, teacher-paced or game-paced, and watch answers arrive live so they can give instant feedback. It's known for show-your-work drawing responses, standards tracking, assessment security features and its Luna AI assistant.

Best for: Teachers and schools that need rigorous, standards-aligned formative and summative assessment with live monitoring, rich item types and feedback.

Why people look for a Formative alternative

  • The single-teacher plan, now called the Classroom Plan, went from $156 a year in January 2025 to $249 a year in 2026.
  • Monthly billing was dropped: every plan is billed annually, and the cheapest works out to $20.75/month for one teacher.
  • The free tier was trimmed to six basic question types, a 14-day tracker look-back, 20 upload pages and 4 exports a month, and it no longer appears on the pricing page.
  • Advanced item types, rubrics and anti-cheating tools require a paid plan.
  • Game Paced mode supports only four question types and disables images, which feels thin next to a dedicated quiz game.

Where Quizzo is better

  • A synchronized game show

Everyone sees the same question at the same moment, followed by an answer chart and top-5 leaderboard, with speed points, music and a podium at the end. Formative's Game Paced mode is a timed race in which students work at their own pace.

  • Images in every game question

Any Quizzo question can carry an image during the game. Formative's Game Paced mode disables images and supports four question types.

  • $9/month, billed monthly

There's no annual commitment, and a full year of Quizzo ($108) costs less than half of Formative's $249 Classroom Plan.

  • Ready in minutes, 500 players

A review game takes minutes to set up, and up to 500 players join with a PIN or QR code, which suits assemblies, grade-wide reviews and events.

Where Formative is better

  • 20+ item types

Free response, show-your-work drawing, graphing, audio and video responses, matching, hot spot and more (many on paid plans). Quizzo is multiple choice only.

  • Serious assessment tools

Student-paced assignments and tests with randomization, copy-paste detection and passwords; districts can add Respondus LockDown Browser. Quizzo has no assignments or tests.

  • Standards, rubrics and grade passback

Standards tracking, rubrics, feedback and Google Classroom grade passback on paid plans. Quizzo has no reports or integrations.

  • Luna AI and Newsela content

Luna generates standards-aligned activities, bell ringers, exit tickets and quizzes from a prompt, PDF or document, and Formative connects to Newsela content. Quizzo has no AI.

Formative pricing vs Quizzo

As of October 2026, Formative's Classroom Plan costs $249 per year for one teacher ($20.75/month), and the new Small School Plan costs $3,125 per year for up to 250 students; larger schools and districts get a quote for Balanced Assessment by Formative. All plans are billed annually, after the single-teacher price rose from $156 a year in January 2025. A Free Teacher plan is still described in Formative's help center but no longer appears on its pricing page, so check before you rely on it. Quizzo is $9/month, billed monthly, for up to 500 players; a full year costs $108, less than half the Classroom Plan.

Should you switch from Formative to Quizzo?

Stay with Formative if you need real assessment: varied item types, show-your-work answers, rubrics, standards tracking, anti-cheating tools and grade passback. Choose Quizzo when you want a live quiz game rather than a test, with synchronized questions, images, speed scoring and a podium for up to 500 players at $9/month, billed monthly.

How to switch from Formative to Quizzo

  1. Create your Quizzo account and open the dashboard.
  2. Click “New quiz”, paste in your questions and answers, and mark the correct one. Add images and timers where you need them.
  3. Press “Start game” to open the lobby, then show the PIN or QR code on the big screen.
  4. Players join at playquizzo.com/join on their phones — no app, no account — and you're live.

Quizzo doesn't import quizzes from other tools yet, so plan a few minutes to copy your questions over.

Formative alternative: FAQ

How much does Formative cost in 2026?

The Classroom Plan for one teacher costs $249/year ($20.75/month, billed annually), the Small School Plan costs $3,125/year for up to 250 students, and districts get a custom quote. Quizzo is $9/month, billed monthly.

Does Formative still have a free plan?

It's unclear. Formative's help center (updated June 2026) still describes a Free Teacher plan with six basic question types, a 14-day tracker look-back and 4 exports a month, but the pricing page no longer lists it, so check Formative's site before relying on it.

Has Formative's price gone up?

Yes. The individual plan rose from $144 to $156 a year in January 2025, then to $249 a year by March 2026, when the monthly option was removed. It's now called the Classroom Plan.

Does Formative have a game mode like Kahoot?

Formative has Game Paced mode, a timed race (5, 10 or 15 minutes, or untimed) with a leaderboard in which students work through questions at their own pace. It supports four question types and disables images. Quizzo runs a host-paced game where everyone answers the same question together, with images, speed scoring and a podium.

Is Formative the same as GoFormative?

Yes. Formative was formerly called GoFormative and has been part of Newsela since June 2023.

Can I move my Formative questions to Quizzo?

Not automatically. Copy your multiple-choice questions into Quizzo's editor and rewrite true/false items as two-answer multiple choice; free-response, drawing and graphing items have no Quizzo equivalent.
